I have a friend who is entering his PhD program and I need a gift idea?

I am interested in something that marks this endeavor and may be a gift that is really appropriate for the occasion, but no one else will think of. I appreciate any links you may have to offer too.

This is a long-time friend, but I also can’t afford to break the bank.
